Discuss the similarities and differences between the works of Joseph Beuys and Montien Boonma. You may cite examples for your answer.

Both artists include themes such as harmony in their works. Joseph Beuys developed many ideas such as harmonizing the forces and nature and civilization, man and technology, while Montien Boonma has ideas about achieving harmony.

Both artists regard art not as a rigid form. Beuys regards art as an energetic process, while Montien Boonma’s works included the element of healing and recovering (through the using of spices and fragrances). Similarly, Beuys defined his sculpture as a medicament, referring to it as an art ointment or art tablet.

Beuys suggests that sculpture to him was alive, with a primarily audible medium. His use of fats in his works probably gives warmth to the sculpture, making it more real. However, Montien Boonma’s works usually suggests death as a gateway to another life. Staircases or gradually changing heights in his works are often seen to illustrate the process of nirvana.

Beuys uses organic and decomposable materials such as honey, fats and food, which are considered as variables, in the sense that they change their form or shape as time changes. Boonma uses materials like wood and steel that are often more lasting in their form.
